Why is my indicator flashing fast?

Usually because one indicator globe has blown. The indicator circuit expects a set electrical load. With one globe out, the load changes and the remaining indicator flashes faster.

Is it illegal to drive with a blown globe?

Yes, if it is a light your car is required to have, such as a headlight, brake light or indicator. Victoria's roadworthiness requirements say every lamp that was required when the vehicle was built must be working.

Police can issue a vehicle defect notice for a car that is not fit for the road, and VicRoads lists broken lights as an example of a minor defect. A defect notice has to be cleared within 28 days, or the car's registration is suspended.

A globe is the cheaper way to deal with it.

When it is not the globe

A new globe will not fix every dead light. A blown fuse, a corroded socket or damaged wiring can put a light out too. We check the electrical connection on every job, and tell you if the fault is somewhere else.

Some faults point away from the lights altogether:

• Every light is dim or flickering. The globes are probably fine. Have the battery and charging system tested. Battery replacement is from $110, and alternator replacement is from $299.
• The indicator in a door mirror is out. On some cars it is part of the mirror. Mirror replacement is from $149.

Should headlight globes be replaced in pairs?

It is the better choice. Globe maker Philips recommends changing headlight globes in pairs, for two reasons.

A globe loses brightness as it ages, so a new one next to an old one gives an uneven beam. The old globe is also likely to fail soon after the first.

Thinking of LED replacement globes?

LED headlights fitted at the factory are legal. Aftermarket LED globes fitted to a halogen headlight have to meet the same Australian Design Rules, and badly aimed ones dazzle other drivers. Lights that don't comply can lead to a defect notice and a fine.

LED indicator globes can also cause trouble. They draw less current than the globes the car expects, which can make the indicators flash fast or bring up a dashboard warning.
